Qualified Practitioner (Essay) Route — Application Process and Timing

Once we receive your Qualified Practitioner Membership Application Form, we will review your qualifications and experience. Assuming everything is in order, you will be admitted as a student member of the Society.

As a student member, you will have four years in which to submit three essays. Successful submission of the essays, together with a significant involvement of your current practice in trusts and/or estates, qualifies you to apply for full membership in STEP.

Alternative Routes

Associate Student Membership

If you have a recognized professional qualification but don't yet have the two-years experience, you may become an Associate Student member under the QP route. You'll be entitled to all the privileges of student membership but must wait until you have the requisite post-qualification practical experience before submitting your essays.
Please note on your application form that you are applying for Associate Student Membership.

Diploma route

Alternatively, you may also apply for admission via the Diploma Route if you work in the trusts and estates industry in Canada but don't have a recognized professional qualification, lack the required two-years post-qualification experience in the industry, feel that you are not yet in a position to demonstrate the expertise of a qualified trust and estates practitioner, or prefer an examination route.
