Qualified Practitioner (Essay) Route — Application Process and Timing

Once we receive your Qualified Practitioner Membership Application Form, we will review your qualifications and experience. Acceptance in the Qualified Practitioner route entitles you to become a student member of the Society.

As a student member, you will have four years in which to submit three essays. You may apply for full membership in STEP following the successful submission of three essays and fulfillment of the practice requirement, which requires that at least 50% of the work in your current practice is dedicated to the area of trusts and/or estate planning at a specialist or advanced technical level.

Alternative Routes

Associate Student Membership

If you have a recognized professional qualification but don't yet have two years of experience, you may apply as an Associate Student member under the QP route. As an Associate Student member, you would pay the student membership rate and have the right to attend STEP Canada events at the member rate. It is expected that you will complete the requisite post-qualification practical experience within two years and then would begin submitting essays.
Please note on your application form that you are applying for Associate Student Membership.

Diploma route

Alternatively, you may also apply for admission via the Diploma Route if you already work in the field of trusts and estate planning in Canada, or have the intention to do so, but either don't have a recognized professional qualification or have a professional qualification but lack the required two years of post-qualification experience. Even as a qualified practitioner, you may decide to pursue the Diploma route if you wish to broaden your knowledge and expertise, or if you prefer writing exams over essays.
