Criteria for the Qualified Practitioner (Essay) Route to Full STEP Membership
  • Qualification - Candidates must have at least one of the following current qualifications and a minimum of two-years current post-qualification practical experience in trusts and/or estate planning:
    • Lawyer (member of provincial bar)
    • Notary (Quebec)
    • MTI (Member, Trust Institute)
    • Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI)
    • One of the major accounting designations: (CGA, CA)
    • An insurance designation (ChFC, CLU)
    • A financial planning designation (CFP, PFP, RFP, Pl. Fin. From the IQPF)
    • Any such comparable designations as may be recognized by the CEO and Director of Professional Development on a case-by-case basis.
  • Experience - You must have at least two-years post-qualification practical experience in trusts and/or estate planning. To upgrade to full membership after successful completion of your essays, at least 50% of the work in your current practice should be dedicated to the area of trusts and/or estate planning at a specialist or advanced technical level.     When accepted for the Qualified Practitioner Route, you join STEP Canada as a student member. Upon satisfying the assessment criteria, you can apply for admission as a full member of the Society.
