Qualified Practitioner (Essay) Route — Application Process and Timing

Once we receive your Qualified Practitioner Enrolment Form, we will review your qualifications and experience. Acceptance in the Qualified Practitioner Route entitles you to become a student member of the Society. Please allow 5-7 business days to process your application.

As a student member, you will have three years in which to submit three essays.

A one-time extension of one year may be granted, on a case-by-case basis, to individuals who require more time to complete their essays. To be considered for an extension, please complete the QP extension form.

Upgrading to Full Membership

You may apply for full membership in STEP following the successful submission of three essays and fulfillment of the practice requirement, which requires that at least 50% of the work in your current practice is dedicated to the area of trusts and/or estate planning at a specialist or advanced technical level.

Alternative Route

Diploma Route

Alternatively, you may also apply for admission via the Diploma Route if you already work in the field of trusts and estate planning in Canada, or have the intention to do so, but either don't have a recognized professional designation or have a professional designation but lack the required three years of post-designation experience. Even as a Qualified Practitioner, you may decide to pursue the Diploma Route if you wish to broaden your knowledge and expertise, or if you prefer writing exams over essays.
