Experienced Practitioner Invitation Route to Membership
This route to membership is only available to those people invited by a Branch Board or the STEP Canada Board to join STEP. The criteria for candidates is outlined below for the use of Branch Executive members and other STEP members wishing to put forward a candidate through their Branch Executive.
Entry Criteria for Candidates
- A minimum of 10 years' work experience in the area of trusts and/or estates
- A relevant recognized professional designation, which includes: LL.B.; Quebec Notary; one of the major accounting designations; a financial planning designation (CFP, PFP, RFP, F.Pl from the IQPF); an insurance designation (ChFC, CLU); the MTI (Member, Trust Institute); FCSI (Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute).
- A detailed written summary (up to 3,000 words) or resume demonstrating their experience and competence, which includes:
- A detailed outline of current areas of practice and responsibilities.
Or:
- Sample(s) of published articles, books, papers and/or lecture notes, demonstrating trust and/or estate experience.
- Declarations from four referees who must include details regarding how they know the candidate and state why they are recommending him or her for STEP membership. One referee must come from the applicant's proposed Branch; a second must be a STEP member.
Application Process
- Branch or National Board members can invite individuals who satisfy the entry criteria (stated above) by sending an EP application form to the potential applicant.
- If the application is made through a branch, the Branch Chair or Secretary must give sign-off approval of the application before it is submitted to STEP Canada.
- The applicant will be required to submit the completed application forms, including a refundable current-year membership payment and a non-refundable application payment of $200 (plus applicable tax) to STEP Canada.
- STEP Canada will approve applications or ask for further information from the Branch or the candidate.
- If it is approved, it will be forwarded to STEP Worldwide.
- The STEP Worldwide Membership Committee will review completed applications at its next available meeting for final approval.
- Once final approval is reached, notification will be sent to the new member and Branch by STEP Canada.
